My Favorite Traditional German Cookbooks

As a trained chef from the Black Forest, I grew up surrounded by old German recipes and handwritten cookbooks. Furthermore, finding authentic German recipes in English is not always easy. Many American cookbooks simplify German food too much. Additionally, these are the books I genuinely recommend. In short, each one has earned its place on my kitchen shelf.

Classic German Cooking — Luisa Weiss

The most comprehensive traditional German cookbook in English right now. Furthermore, it covers everything from Rinderrouladen to Germknödel with beautiful photos and authentic recipes. Additionally, Luisa Weiss grew up in Berlin — so the recipes are genuinely authentic.

Classic German Baking — Luisa Weiss

The definitive English-language guide to German baking. Furthermore, it covers Pfeffernüsse, Streuselkuchen, Bienenstich and much more. Additionally, every recipe has been tested thoroughly. In short, if you love German baking this is the book to get.

The German Cookbook — Mimi Sheraton

A classic that has been in print since 1965. Furthermore, it covers the full range of German cuisine from soups to desserts. Additionally, every recipe has been tested for the American kitchen. In short, this is the most complete German cookbook available in English.

The Wurst — Otto Wolff

Perfect for beginners who want to cook classic German food without regional complexity. Furthermore, every recipe includes a photo. Additionally, it covers Rouladen, Spätzle, Käsespätzle, Königsberger Klopse and more — exactly the dishes on my blog!

German Meals at Oma’s

A wonderful collection of traditional German home cooking recipes. Furthermore, Gerhild grew up in Germany and shares the recipes her grandmother made. Additionally, it is written specifically for the American kitchen.
